UPDATE:
Firmware 3.15 is now live and available to download.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE:
An optional PlayStation 3 software update, version 3.15, will soon be available, and with it comes support for ‘minis’ and a feature that enables you to easily transfer data from one PS3 to another. The update, as posted today on the European PlayStation Blog, will be available very soon.
This latest firmware update will essentially create a minis emulator to play on your PS3. These smaller games originally launched in October for the PSP, and by Dec. 17, you will also be able to play them on your PS3. If you already downloaded a minis game for your PSP, you can still download it on your PS3 for free through the PlayStation Store.

The other major feature with firmware 3.15 is the PS3 data transfer feature. This feature will allow you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another system. This will make the process of purchasing a new PS3 a whole lot easier as you won’t lose any of your existing content. You can transfer data such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from the PlayStation Network and you will have to delete the files from the old system. Personal media files, like photos, music, and videos, can be copied to the new PS3 without having to delete them on the old system.

Y do I get the feeling the data transfer feature would have made my upgrade of the hard drive for 60 to 500gb much easier :P
damm backup wouldn't work so i hadf to redownload most stuff. only thing I was able to keep was my saves (thank god)

Good, I'm giving my 5 year old my old PS3, and I'm getting a slim PS3 250 GB HDD, I want the white FFXIII one, this will save me a huge headache from bringing all my files over to the new one...

The data transfer thing would have been useful, but one thing that would be useful would be to be able to use a hard drive from one ps3 in another because i lost all of my data because my ps3 broke and i got a slim and couldn't transfer the hard drives. just a tad gay i think

Like #11 - My 6y/o son is getting a slim ps3 from Santa this year. Although he would benefit more from just taking my 60GB because he still plays his ps2 games, I just can't bring myself to part with it. So, I'm hoping that whatever good I'm doing by getting him a ps3 isn't dulled by the fact that I'm not giving him the better option to go with here. Hopefully that doesn't make me out to be a bad person.

I like the transfer idea. Too bad we don't have cross game chat. I really think that is all the PS3 needs.

I agree with #13, same thing happened to me, I lost everything when my ps3 broke. They should definetly allow you to keep everything in your hardrive if your put it in another ps3. It will make things a lot easier b/c I don't have to redownload everything and lose all of my saves, movies, music, etc.

so wait you have to delete the save games from the old system? if so, this isnt very useful to me. i want my save games to work on both of my ps3s (i might get a second one for christmas as my mom wants a dedicated bluray player).

I could have used the PS3 to PS3 data transfer when I was home for Thanksgiving playing Demon's Souls and couldn't transfer my save from the PS3 there to my PS3 at school lol. Oh well this is awesome.

@11 PS3 for a 5 year old? Really? One - I doubt he'll be able to really get into the games like PS3 has. I mean advanced 3D ones. Two - it could be money down the drain soon, because of the age...Nice how some aren't feeling the effects of the economy, though ;)

if they're creating an emulator for the minis, they should come out with an emulator for all PSP games; that way you could be able to play god of war chains of olympus, patapon, and other great PSP on your PS3; that would be cool!

The back up feature isnt really all that helpful unless youhave two PS3s at the same time. What we really need is a way to back up our files to a new HD if you upgrade from a smaller drive to a larger one. If I'm going form a 120gb drive to a 320gb drive there's no way to perform this. This iw what they need to create a feature for. Or better yet anyone that has a system die on them and needs to rescue their data from the harddrive because when they fix or refurbish your system it wont recognize your old data.

@36 Exactly, I loss everything when my ps3 broke (including saves for games like GTA 4). Anyone who played GTA 4 knows how long it takes to beat it............................I was around 85% finished.......Now I have to start all over :(

the data transfer wiont copy everything over data protected saves will still be locked,
the HD backup is designed for placing back onto the same machine it was taken from originally (wont work if you try to place onto a secondary machine)
you'll be best to go to the blog site to read the details as it covers some of the comments made here

Solid features - but I would love to see you be able to host the saved game data somewhere multiple systems could see/access them. I mean, I have one in the bedroom and one in my basement for streaming all my media/movies/shows. How annoying to only be able to play the game in one location, or have to copy and delete the data each time i want to play upstairs or downstairs. Before I didn't have the option so I just dealt with it ......now I have this tease hang'n over my head...LOL
Solid start - but still pretty limiting. They are pitching this to be the way to go, the do it all, the media center....so treat it like one =)
